I’m not sure who exactly it was. I can’t even remember which nationality the person was. What they said though has stuck with me. The person made the comment that rice was their staple diet, but it was expressed something like this. ‘It is as if we have an extra stomach, and this stomach is purely for rice. No matter what else we eat, no matter how much or how lovely, we are never really, truly satisfied until we eat rice.’ This struck me because I could relate to it in two ways. I guess back then I was the same when it came to bread and so I could identify with the feeling, but the main reason I remember it so long after is that I can identify with this in a spiritual way. Let’s rewrite it then in a spiritual way. ‘It is as if I, as a Christian, have an extra stomach, and this stomach is purely for spending time with God in prayer. No matter what else I put into myself, no matter how much or how lovely, I am never really, truly satisfied until I spend time with God in prayer.’ This, I believe, should be normal.
