In the course of identifying the distinction between Israel after the flesh and the Israel of God, Paul quotes Isaiah's reference to the stumbling stone and rock of offence. We consider the historical context of this allusion to Jesus and the people of the two houses of Israel who stumble at Him, by way of gaining a fuller understanding of Paul's teaching in Romans chapter 9.
