Understanding, as we do, that it is by grace, through faith, that we are saved, we do not often consider that paradoxically, that which we freely receive not only without any merit of our own, but having much demerit within ourselves, comes also with many and various rewards. All the way from the gift of God Himself (our "exceeding great reward"), through to a glass of water, or even a reward in the wake of faithful endurance of persecution, we have many opportunities in our lives as we follow Jesus in the way of the cross, to accrue precious rewards in the age to come. The abiding encouragement from the scriptures is that we believe: "without faith it is impossible to please him, for he that comes to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him."
